FAKE OVERPRINT*

28 Kopecks

Vertical Overprint on USSR 1k Definitive from 1976

Pst T4F

*Note: My information was that these fake overprints were produced in Ukraine. The scan above represents the only copy I have observed and was taken from a cover. I have yet to observe a 20k vertical overprint or any horizontal overprints on the USSR 1k definitive of 1976, although these may well exist.

Important Notes:

Se-Tenant Pairs/Blocks/Strips & Sheet Composition:

A full sheet of these stamps is composed of 100 stamps (10 x 10).

The top left group of 25 (5 x 5) stamps is overprinted as per T2 above (28k horizontally).

The top right group of 25 (5 x 5) stamps is overprinted as per T1 above (20k horizontally).

The bottom left group of 25 (5 x 5) stamps is overprinted as per T4 above (28k vertically).

The bottom right group of 25 stamps (5 x 5) is overprinted as per T3 above (20k vertically).

This naturally gives rise to the possibility of multiple combinations of se-tenant pairs, blocks and strips.

Illustrated above is the choicest se-tenant block combination with an example of each stamp variety.

Overprint Alignment & Position Varieties

The overprinting process was extremely rudimentary and little quality control was enforced. The positioning of the overprints relative to the stamp and even to each line is not constant. The "date" line can appear indented relative to the "Tiraspol" and values lines. The value line may appear shifted left, right, upwards or downwards relative to the other two lines. Also the entire overprint may appear so far shifted to the left, that they span two separate stamps and may therefore appear to be truncated or repeated. This gives rise to vast numbers of possible "shifted overprint " varieties. The listing of all these varieties is outside the scope of this catalogue and would be the subject of a specialist study.

Other Varieties

In addition to the "shifted overprint" varieties mentioned above, there are also known to exist other varieties as follows:

  • Missing "ТирасполЬ" line. This is an extremely rare variety. Perhaps only 300 of each type exist (vertical and horizontal)

  • Missing full stop after "KOП"

  • Missing hyphens on "date" line

  • Overprint shade variations

"Sun Face" Secondary Overprint Types

Full sheets of these stamps were also overprinted a second time with the "Sun Face" motif. Click here for details.
